The BC Teaching Standards outline the professional expectations and responsibilities for educators in the province. The document outlines the nine (9) professional standards that outline the framework for ethical teaching and instructional excellence. The standards vary – some outline instructional practice such as effective teaching, assessment and planning. Other standards outline ethics, such as inclusive classroom strategy, culturally responsive instruction etc.
The Standards are important to the profession as they offer consistent guidelines for educators to follow which is helpful with a career that is mostly autonomous. Additionally, by promoting reflective practice and a commitment to lifelong learning, the standards help teachers continuously improve their pedagogy.
