BC Curriculum

Find linked below the homepage of the BC Curriculum website.

The BC Curriculum is a framework that guides teaching practice for TC’s and teachers throughout the province, outlining overarching big ideas, specific subject content and core competencies.

Theoretically speaking, the curriculum offers multiple open-ended entry points for teaching subject areas and content which promotes teacher autonomy in delivering lessons that are responsive to student needs.

However, while the curriculum promotes personalised learning, inequities remain in how it is implemented. Factors such as access to resources (rural or lower SES schools), culturally responsive materials, and systemic barriers (racism, gender inequities etc) impact how effectively students engage with the curriculum. While the curriculum is open-ended, it also allows room for inequities to seep into the classroom. Teachers are allowed autonomy, but true equity in education requires reflective, advocative and holistic educators who can adapt the curriculum to meet the historically marginalised students.
