FPPL

The First Peoples Principles of Learning (FPPoL) is a framework created by First Nations Elders, scholars, and knowledge keepers in 2006/2007. It outlines key principles intended to guide the BC curriculum in incorporating more Indigenous knowledge, worldviews, and ways of knowing. The FPPoL serves as a valuable teaching tool, helping educators embed Indigenous perspectives into their lessons in meaningful and culturally responsive ways.

In my own practice, the FPPoL has been instrumental in shaping how I approach land-based learning, community connections, and holistic, experiential teaching strategies. It has provided a strong foundation for integrating Indigenous knowledge with authenticity and respect. However, I recognise that true decolonisation cannot be achieved by relying on a framework alone. Rather, it requires ongoing, intentional reflection and action at the individual level, with the integration of multiple sources and perspectives.
